From apprentice to mentor, celebrating National Apprenticeship Week!

This NationalApprenticeWeek, we’re catching up Paul Brooke, who joined us 28 years ago as our very first Pave Aways apprentice!

Paul started as an apprentice carpenter and is now a mentor himself, having guided eight apprentices over the years, including our current apprentice, Aaron. Reflecting on his experience, Paul said:

“Apprenticeships have evolved so much since I started. Now, apprentices get to work on really interesting projects with a great mix of hands-on learning and a day at college each week. It’s amazing to think back on how many careers I’ve helped shape over the years.”

“Construction is a brilliant industry to be part of. I could be fitting timber sash windows one day and installing a mezzanine floor, roof trusses or fire doors the next. No two days are ever the same. Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to learn new skills while working, they are the future of construction.”

Aaron Pritchard, Paul’s current apprentice studying for his Level 2 Site Carpentry qualification, shared his thoughts:

“In a typical day, I’ll watch and learn how to do tasks from Paul. Most of the time, tasks involve multiples, and it’s great to learn how to do these then give it a go myself. Going to college, learning from tutors, then trying it out on-site with Paul and seeing different methods in action is really interesting.

I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship to anyone thinking about it – you’re gaining practical skills, it’s a great experience, and you’ll get a recognisable qualification at the end.”

Pave Aways have a commitment to source at least 4 new apprentices or trainees each year from our partners in local colleges and training companies, or from within our own workforce who wish to learn a trade like Aaron did.

A big milestone in our apprentice programme involved winning the Apprentice Employer of the Year (Medium) at the first-ever Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Apprenticeship Awards in October last year.
