Future-proof eco-school earns award nomination

We are delighted that a project to bring a new-generation eco-school to Shrewsbury has earned Pave Aways a nomination in the Insider West Midlands Property Awards.

We are delighted that a project to bring a new-generation eco-school to Shrewsbury has earned Pave Aways a nomination in the Insider West Midlands Property Awards.

The carbon neutral building for Harlescott Junior School uses innovative construction methods to create significant energy saving measures. It was commissioned by Shropshire Council and supports the council’s aim to reduce its emissions to zero by 2030.

The building has now been shortlisted in the sustainability category of the awards. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel on November 17. Last year we won the award for Fit-out / Refurbishment of the Year for our work on Ludlow’s Assembly Rooms.

The new building in Featherbed Lane allowed the Haughmond Federation to consolidate all its primary and early years schools onto the same site, with Sundorne Infant School and Nursery moving from Corndon Crescent and onto the Harlescott Junior School site.

The new building included two nursery classrooms, four reception classrooms, eight classrooms for Key Stage 1, four classrooms for Key Stage 2, a pupil support hub, hall, kitchen, offices and meeting rooms.

The existing Victorian school building was also refurbished with energy saving measures retrofitted to meet carbon neutral standards.

The project has not only produced a sustainable building for the future, but the local focus of the build process also reduced the carbon footprint. The £9.1 million project took 15 months to complete, with 82 per cent of the budget spent within 20 miles of the site. In all, 300 people worked on the project, with almost 80 per cent of them travelling less than 15 miles to get there.

The West Midlands Property Awards, now in their 22nd year, are the region’s big celebration of commercial property
